THE LEWIS PASS ROUTE IN WINTER
A member of the A.A., Nelson, has recently returned from a holiday at HanmtT where lie camped iu one of the hats provided by the A.A., Canterbury, for the use of members of all affiliated associations. We are told that the huts aije very comfortable, even iu winter. They arp provided with good spring bunks with high quality mattresses while a stove and ample firewood afford excellent heating. The return journey from Hanmer was) made by way of the Lewis Pass route. There had been a fall of snow on the pasp but a grader had been run over the hill and there was not the slightest trouble in making the run.
From a scenic point of view there is little doubt that the run is more beautiful in the winter as the snow clad peaks add considerably to the grandeur of the views obtained along the route. The run down from the Lewis Pass presented, so the traveller told us, no difficulties of any sort and we are assured that under the present weather conditions the trip is a pleasaut one. Naturally after heavy weather one should inquire as to conditions before setting out and we are reminded that the Automobile Association is always able to provide fresh information to any of its members who arc planning trips.
