WAIRAU MASSACRE
FINDING OF MAORI WOMAN’S REMAINS STATEMENT BY NATIVES [United Pre»g Association] BLENHEIM. 31st May Information given by the descendants of Te Ronga, the Maori woman whose death from a British bullet led to the Wairau massacre, makes it practically certain that the skeleton found on the spur of Massacre Hill overlooking the scene of the first clash between Te Rauparaha’s party and Captain Wakefield’s men, is that of Princess Te Ronga.
The Natives now state that Princess Te Ronga was buried near the spot where she was slain. It had been intended to remove the body later for burial, probably in the North Island, but events after the massacre moved too quickly and the remains were left where they were buried.
