“DISCOVERY”

SOUTH ISLANDS TRAVEL ASSOCIATION BOOKLET MATTER OF FUTURE PUBLICATIONS The discussion on the booklet "Discovery” which was recently issued by the South Islands Travel Association, was taken in committee at the meeting of the executive this morning. In his report the director, Mr J. J. W. Pollard, stated: Owing to the difficulty of obtaining pictures in the later stages the production of “Discovery” was delayed and it emerged six weeks later than was intended. This year it is proposed to issue it in September. The 1937 issue has been made under an arrangement with Mr L. H. Buchanan who supplied 10.000 copies to tne Association free of cost, to specifications laid down by the Association. The arrangement was that 24 pages should be used by the Asso- , elation as it thought fit. eight being illustrations on art paper. The remainder of the book was to be paid for and display advertising was to be avoided. Last year, when this arrangement was entered into the funds of the Association did not permit of the risk of at least £2OO to £3OO in the necessary preparatory work, and the arrangement which gave the Association 10.000 copies of a work it required without cost and without risk was deemed favcurable. The book has been the subject of complimentary remarks and al- i ! ready arrangements for the despatch of i 6.000 copies overseas have been com- ! pleted. The Union S.S. Co., and the j Matson Line have each taken 1.000 copies for use on their vessels and over- | seas offices. About 1.500 will go to Vancouver for Miss Sykes and a number will be distributed in Honolulu by i her. Following the example of the . ; Australian National Travel Associa- j tion we propose to post copies to professional men in Australia. Mr G. H. Andrews said he was pleased with the production but South Canterbury was disappointed that there was no mention of the Mt. Cook districk. He moved that in future no publication be issued by the association without first being approved by the emergency committee and the members of the districts concerned on the executive. If it was first scrutinised by the executive it would obviate any trouble. He congratulated the director on the publication. Mr J. Miller said it was important that the executive should know what

was being done and this motion would prevent any trouble in the future. He seconded the motion. Mr C. H. Clibborn moved that the executive go into committee to discuss the matter, and the motion was passed. On resuming in open meeting Mr Andrews’ motion was carried.
