CRICKET
COUNTRY TEAM’S MODERATE SCORE
MATCH WITH CANTERBURY AT TALMERSTON NORTH
MULCOCK'S GOOD BOWLING 1 IBy Telegraph—Press Association] PALMERSTON N., 12th January. Arranged primarily as a test for the contention that Country should be constituted a fifth Plunket Shield district, a two-day cricket match between the Canterbury Plunket Shield team and the Wellington minor associations was begun at the sportsground to-day. Minor associations batted first and compiled 223 runs, and in the hour and a half remaining Canterbury replied with 50 without the loss of a wicket. Batting first, Minor Associations’ first three wickets fell cheaply. The first man went with the total at 13, the next at 14, and the third without any improvement. McVicar and Pollitt, who put on 255 against Rangitikei, failed dismally to repeat the performance. With his total at five Pollitt snicked one to Webb, and the succeeding man, Robertson, was at the wickets only a short time before he was clean bowled by Read. Webb added another victim to his tally when he neatly caught McVicar off a leg shot.
The partnership between Donnelly and Petersen, however, saw a change in fortunes, and the score began to mount rapidly. The half-century went on the board in 72 minutes. Shortly afterward Read held a good catch at mid-on to dismiss Petersen for 28, and County were four wickets down for 91. Donnelly was joined by Gallichan, and 100 : came up after 109 minutes of play. Gallichan’s reign was short, for after scoring six runs he went out of his crease to meet a ball from Cromb and was promptly stumped by Webb. Donnelly batted on strongly to reach 59, where he was caught by Mcßae off Mulcock. The score was then six wickets for 131. Murchison and Norris moved the total steadily along to 183, when Norris, who was 29. snicked one from Mulcock to Webb behind the wic- i kets. Minor Associations reached 200 at , 4.15 p.m.. after 227 minutes, with Mur- i chison (50) and Pritchard at the crease, j Almost the next ball saw Murchison stumped by Webb off Mulcock. He had , been batting consistently and hit five | boundaries. Pritchard, McCoy and Downes were dismissed fairly quickly, and the last wicket fell at 4.40 p.m. The , innings lasted 253 minutes. E. T. Mulcock was worrying the country batsmen all the way. He took his toll of wickets and his total was six for 55. 1 Canterbury’s opening pair. Cromb and Gasson, batted confidently and the side was 30 up after 43 minutes of play. Canterbury were 50 up at the close of play with their wickets still intact.
