BOARD’S MONTHLY MEETING

INCREASING REVENUE OF PORT ADDITIONAL LAND FOR AERODROME The monthly meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board held yesterday afternoon was attended by Messrs A. GouM (chairman). W. C. Harley, H. W. Kelly, W. H. Chisnall. G. Manson, A. E. Max, C. T. Price. F I. Ledger, and A. R. Kingsford. Mr J. H. Brunt was excused from attendance INCOME REPORT The chairman reported as follows on the income of the harbour with comparative figures for the December period, 1936:

Totals ... £2490 18 0 £3107 1 1 For the period from Ist October to 31st December, 33.416 tons was handled, the revenue being £7367, compared with 28.419 tons for the same period in 1936, with revenue amounting to £6306. lIA RBO UKM A STER’S REPORT The Harbourmaster (Captain A. G. Christie) reported as follows for the month of December:— The number of vessels arriving during the past month was 92, and departures numbered 90. The amount of registered tonnage for the month was 35.266. coin pa red with 27.439 tons fer the corresponding m< nth last year. The overseas steamer Fordsdalc arrived on the 19th, and after loading and discharging departed on the 23rd De*cember. 1937 Dredging during the month has been carried out in the cross channel. The amount of spoil lifted was 1260 tons, consisting of mud and sand, and being conveyed to sea in 18 loads. The dredge was laid up on the 24th December, 1937, and will resume on the 12th January instant Soundings are being taken in the entrance when the tide is suitable. The cost per ton of dredging and repairs for December, 1937, was Is 9j,*d. WHARFINGER’S REPORT The Wharfinger (Mr J. W. Harris) reported as follows for the month:— I have to report that the following cargo was received at the wharves during the month of December 1937: During the week ending 4th December. 1937, 3742 Ions; 11th December, 1937, 2130 Ions; 18th December, 1937, 3865 tons; 25th December, 1937. 4161 Total for month of December, 1937. I inward cargo, 9651 tons; outward cargo, (4247 tons; total, 13.898 tons. As compared with month of December, 1936, inward cargo, 6669 tons; outwards cargo. 4687 tons; total. 11.356 tons. Increase of outward cargo, 2.982 tons; decrease of outward cargo. 440 tons; lota 1 increase, 2542 tons. Throughout the past month we were kept exceptionally busy. Quite a large : amount of inward and rutward cargo | was handled over the wharves, and outside labour was employed to cope with the work on hand. During the month the overseas vessel Fordsdalc arrived and discharged 1190 tons of general cargo and loaded 503 tons of outward cargo, consisting of 467 bales of woo l and skins 265 tons of frozen meat, and 23 drums of tallow. I may mention during the first three months of this financial year 4997 tons of cargo | were received in excess of that of the same months of last. year. 1 MAPUA WHARFINGER’S REPORT The Mapua wharfinger (Mr D. Blanche) reported as follows: The month of December showed an increase of trade at the port as compared to December. 1936 The following cargo passed over the wharves during the month:— 1936 1937 Inward 300 tons 306 tons! at this port With our new sheds, many difficulties that came about through lack of space will now disappear. and we should experience no trouble in handling the greater trade. The reports were adopted. WHARVES AND FINANCE A meeting of the Wharves and Finance Committee was held on Wednesday, 22nd December, when there were present: Messrs A. Gould (chairman), H. W. Kelly, W. C. Harley. F. I. Ledger and A. R Kingsford. It was resolved to make the following recommendations to the board: — “That the board carry out repairs to the building occupied by the Fruitgrowers’ Federation. Port Nelson, as recommended by the works foreman.” “That Mr A. G. Field be offered £ISOO without prejudice as compensation fer taking his land for aerodrome purposes.” “That the letter from Mr E. J. Hankin applying for the position of dredgemaster of the board’s proposed new dredge be filed for reference.” “That the annual holiday leave of any member of the staff shall not accumulate for a longer period than what is equal to two annual leaves.” “That all quarterly berthage charges be cancelled ” The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE In reply to the board’s suggestion for the employment of a full time secretary jof the New Zealand Harbour Board’s | Industrial Union of Employers, the i executive replied that the members were of opinion that when the boards became used to the awards a full time officer would not be required. The Cawthron Institute Tiust Board applied for exemption from rates in accordance with recent legislation. The matter was deferred until the February meeting The Cook Strait Airways advised that a committee consisting of Flighti Lieut. G. Bolt and Mr E. H. Thompson had been appointed to confer with the Harbour Board's Airport Committee in reference to arrangements for the change over to the new aerodrome. The matter was referred to the Airport Committee. The Waterside Workers’ Picnic Committee was granted £3 3s towards the picnic fund. The chairman reported that he had written to the Minister of Defence inviting the Ccnlaurus to land at Nelson. The Minister replied that the arrangej ments were in the hands of Imperial Airways, and that no arrangements could be made outside of provision for the official landing The New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board wrote asking if the board had anything further to report concerning the making of Nelson into a semifinal loading port fo export, and asking :f the board could give an indication when a decision would be made in regard to future intentions. It was decided to reply that the board had nothing further to report. The Aurora Sailing Club v/ote suggesting an extension of the new boat shed for the purpose of providing a Sailing Club room. The club would guarantee the rent of such a shed. Mr Price said the board did not have the money to put into such a scheme. T warn you to get out of the wood with other things.” Mr Harley “Which wood, Mr Price?” Mr Price mentioned that the board had other heavy commitments in the purchase of Mr Field’s property, and ! the dredge question had to be consider- I ed. The board, he added was rapidly I spending its reserves. The matter was referred to the Fin- ; ancc Committee Mr Harley moved that the board’s engineer give an estimate of the cost of moving the pilot boat’s controls *o the wheelheuse.
