ACCIDENT AT GREYMOUTH
WATERSIDER SERIOUSLY INJURED I By Telegraph—Press Association! GREYMOUTH, 20th December. When part of a sling of Australian hardwood which was being unloaded from the steamer Karepo at Greymouth at 4.30 this afternoon became loose, the whole sling collapsed, and a waterside worker, John Mclntyre, aged 60, a married man with eight children, was struck by three 501 b 12foot lengths of hardwood. He suffered serious head and chest injuries and was admitted to the Grey Hospital, where he is on the seriously ill list. The sling had been prepared in the ordinary way, but a sudden jerk caused three pieces of hardwood to loosen and the rest of the sling fell over the greater part of the hold. Mclntyre was standing on the port side and was unable to get clear before being heavily struck.
