Onion Plant shortage in Auckland

Numbers of people seeking onion plants for kitchen gardens are finding it almost impossible to obtain supplies (says the Auckland "Star”). There is Me most serious shortage experienced for many years, and growers and retailers are being forced to ration supplies The price of the young plants has been raised over 50 per cent, by growers and dealers, and even then most of them have been unable to cope with all the orders received. One city dealer has been forced to turn down orders for 10 000 and 20,000 plants, and V, offer a few hundred where buyers have asked for thousands. In the market gardens it To Papapa, Avonctale. and Glen Eden the situation is much the same. Continued rain at the time of planting onion seeds, and later, resulted in a prevalence of mildew, wmch rotted away many of the seedlings. Pukekohe growers also suffered, and local dealers say it is impossible to secure supplies of the young plants m that district. The position is so bad. according to one St. Helier’s grower, that for the first time in his experience nc has been lorced to have guards for his onion teds when away from home. Piracy is becoming a serious problem for him. 11 is feared that the result of (he scarcity of plants will be a smaller planting and a reduced crop. There may be a shortage unless supplies ol southern and imported onions make up the deficiency.
