HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER STATION
LET TO HUME PIPE COY. (United l’res3 Association) WELLINGTON, 15th March. The letting of a huge pipe contract to the Hume Pipe Co. marks a further step in the development and extension of the generating capacity of ihe Waikaremoana hydro electric power station. The pipe line is a steel one, 3500 feet in length, and this will be used in conjunction with the new 16,000 kilowatt capacity generator and the accompanying turbine now being constructed in Great Britain. The new pipe line will be parallel with the existing line® and the Public Works Department will construct the necessary anchorages and foundations. As the pipes range from 6ft Gin down to sft Gin in diameter, they will be very substantial. Where the pipes enter the powerhouse they will be subjected to a continual expansion pressure of approximately 3001 b to the square inch, so that care and accuracy will be needed in their manufacture. It is intended to transport the steel plates to be used on to the site of the pipe line and there to weld them into the pipes. The completion of this unit will bring the total generating power of the station to 48.000 kilowatts.
