NELSON SUCCESSES MATHEMATICAL TRIPOS News has been received at Nelson College that the name of T. E. Easterfield appears in the list of Wrangin -Part II of the Mathematical Tripos. • !. : - , The Mathematical Tripos is the Honours examination in Mathematics in the University of Cambridge, and the Wranglers are the candidates placed in the first class. Formerly the names in each class were placed in order of merit, the head of the first class being known as the Senior Wranglers. The names of the successful candidates in each class are now published in alphabetical order.

Mr T. E. Easterfield, who is an Old Boy of Nelson College, and a son of Professor Easterfield, had a* brilliant school and university record in New Zealand. In 1928 he was dux of Nelson College and topped the New Zealand Junior University Scholarship list at the age of sixteen. In his third year at Canterbury College he won three senior university scholarships, a feat which has seldom been equalled. His university career in New Zealand culminated in his gaining double first class honours in the degree of‘Master of Science.

ECONOMICS TRIPOS Mr R. S. Duncan, elder son of Mr H. R. Duncan of Nelson, has obtained second class honours in the Economics Tripos at the University of Cambridge, England. The gaining of a place in a Cambridge Tripos carries with it the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Mr Duncan is an Old Boy of Nelson College and of Canterbury University College! While at Ne'son College he was a prominent swimmer and gymnast and won the sonicr gymnastic, competition, an honour which he and his brother, Mr Shcito Duncan, won in alternate years. In his first year at Cambridge. Mr Duncan secured the highest marks while representing Cambridge in a gymnastic competition with Leeds University and later has been captain of the University gymnrstic club. He has also taken a special interest in skiing and was a member of the highest class at Obergurgl, Austria.
