CATTLE BREAK LOOSE
TROUBLE WITH D’URVILLE ISLAND SHIPMENT ONE ANIMAL SHOT The second shipment of cattle from D’Urville Island, within a few days brought by the Pearl Kasper for Messrs Thomson Bros., was driven out to Stoke yesterday morning, and the work was not accomplished without considerable difficulty and danger. Two of the herd broke loose from the main body on the way to the country, and for three hours one beast roamed the road from the vicinity of the Port Police Station to Magazine Point and back again, to the consternation of 'a number of people, in cars and afoot, until in desperation one of the drovers put an end to its career with a welldirected bullet through the head.Several people also had narrow escapes at the horns of the other animal, which had wandered on to the reclamation, one bystander, Mr C. Ricketts, suffering a gashed cheek; while the timely intervention of a dog saved two small children from injury. The steer was later roped and taken away on a lorry. Traffic Inspector C. E. Parkinson was on duty at the port during the morning, owing to a certain amount of disorganisation of traffic, the animal being prepared to charge any vehicle within range. Owing to . a certain fear for the children, it was decided not to hold Sunday School at Tahuna in the morning, for several animals broke away at the beach, and gardens were visited, one resident being chased into his house.
