ENGINEER’S OFFENCE
POSED AS A DOCTOR PLEA OF GUILTY (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Pleading guilty to six charges of practising under the style of a doctor, not being a registered medical practitioner, Norman Kenneth Sligo, aged 36, an engineer, was convicted and discharged, and remanded for a week on a charge of being in arrears of maintainance. The Magistrate said: “The punishment for this class of offence is extremely light, being £5 for each day on which the deception is practised. A man like this could cause untold harm. It is no use fining this man as he has no money.” . It was stated on behalf of the police that in addition to the charges laid, they knew he had been passing himself off as a registered medical practitioner. He had previous convictions for being in possession of dangerous drugs, for indecent assault and for assault, and yesterday he appeared for sentence in the Supreme Court, and was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment, for false pretences. Charges of practising as a doctor arose from investigations made when Sligo was a resident at Titahi Bay in April, and was reported to be practising as a doctor. Some-of his patients he sent to hospital in the false name of Dr. Graham Graham, and even visited them there.
