RACING NOTES
(BY “CUDDLE”)
THE OPOTIKI MEETING The annual meeting of the Opotiki Jockey Club will be held at Tauranga on the King’s Birthday to-morrow. While not of very good class, good acceptances have been received and the racing should be interesting. The Cup, of one mile and a quarter, for a stake of £l6O and cup valued at 15gns., has drawn a good field of fiL teen iiorses. Enge, 8.3, heads the list and looks to be the logical favourite, after his recent racing to get him into good form. Lagoon is a decided possibility, while Keith Lu and Queen Nono, both on 7.3, have chances, especially the former. The sprinter Tradesman, with only 7.5 on his back, is in light and might spring a surprise on this field. ’ The open sprint finds Boughal top weight with 9.2, and he will probably be favourite. If Solaria could be persuaded to leave with the others he would have a great show of winning as it is not a good field. Mungaere is a speedy hack. If reserved Enge would keep them all busy over the last 100 yards. The Otara Hurdles of one mile and a half should see Modern Maid repeat his Auckland performance and make it two on end. Black Marlin, Booklaw and Kanapa will appreciate the drop from Town Hall company, and will make the top weight carry her 11.5 all the way from starter to judge.
The Bay of Plenty Steeples, of iwo miles and a half, should provide a good race, and the recent Auckland winner illuminagh, 9.13, seems. to be the right way, especially in view of Tangled’s form. Golden England, 11.7, appears to have too much weight, while Master Musk is doubtful. The main opposition would appear to be from the proved jumper and stayer, Emancipation, and the seasoned The Hiker. Illuminagh, The Hiker and Emancipation will probably finish in that order. The remaining four events should see the following horses prominent:— Novice: Gay Athlone, Ruaville, Matonag. Stewards: Tronvaille, Little Ruse, Leo Collossus. Waioeka: Cappy, Full o’ Scotch, Mangahaka. Knatarere: Lucidus, Killadar, Black Man, Valueless.
