The cricket test between South Africa and Australia was continued in warm sunny weather, with a north-east-er blowing. . , . South Africa were dismissed in the second innings for 282, and Australia wiped off the deficit with nine wickets in. hand. Rowan and Nourse resumed batting for South Africa. The wicket was powdery and damaged, Grimmett concentrating on a badly worn patch on the legside. Rowan early had a narrow escape from stumping. The field was so %vell Maced that runs were checked. However Rowan and Nourse quietly forged ahead, taking most of tlie runs from Fleetwood-Smithi, but Grimemtt was treated with respect, bowling four maidens in succession. Two hundred runs came in 197 minutes. Shortly after-, wards Rowan when 49 fell victim to Grimmett. Four for 207.. , Rowan jumped out and was beaten by an offbreak, the ball just removing the bails. Nourse, who was then 72, was exceptionally solid and steady, and carried his score to 91, when caught on O’Reilly. Five for 833. O’Reilly and Fleetwood-Smith bowled for ninety minutes unchanged before lunch, after which O’Reilly’ set a leg trap as a result of which Nounnq was caught by Fingleton at sillyleg. Nourse played a greathearted innings and received an ovation

O’Reilly resuming after lunch immediatelv struck u deadly spell, getting Wade"with the third hall, and,Nicholson with the fifth. Grininiett also quickly accounted for Dalton and three wickets thus fell for no runs. ' Crisp began with his customary vigour and crashed Grimmett over the straight boundary but the tailenders were soon dismissed, the innings closing after 289 minutes. ' . O’Reilly bowled magnificently taking five for 28 to-day. Australia was left with 102 runs to get in 180 minutes. Fingleton’ and Brown opened comfortably but .when the latter was 22 Nicholson missed an easy, chance of stumping him. The same batsman was later easily caught . at mid-on.
