SUBSIDY ON FARM PRODUCE
ON CURRENT SEASON’S SALES l PROMISE BY-MINISTER OF M , t AGRICULTURE y ! ft. ■ •} (Bv Association) ■'j . HAMILTON.iIThis Day. I ..A, promise that the dairy farmers of New. Zealand would receive a bonus or • subsidy , on- the current season’s! sales of - produce was made at,,Te.Uku last night V by the. Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. f Lee Martin. “I do not know that I can make a definite pronouncement' as to ’• when guaranteed prices will come into ,4 operation,” said Mr Martin, “but the 5 party is definitely dealing with the question. As you know butter was selling some months ago at 127 s and the price is now down-to about 86s with a < tendency that it will drop further. The Government will have to meet that posi- ’• tion. Already I have been in confe/ence j with the Minister of Finance who is responsible for finding the money, and I think I can promise the chairman (who - wag;a dairy farmer) that he will receive a bonus in connection, with -this year’s operations. It will not of course be on the lines of a guaranteed price. It will be more in the direction of a subsidy which will bring the price up to a payable level. Guaranteed prices ,cannot be put into operation until the necessary legislation has been passed.”
