OBSERVANCE GENERAL
SPEED LIMIT IN BRITAIN WORKING SMOOTHLY (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, 18th March. Tlie thirty miles per hour speed limit in British streets and roads traversing built-up areas came into force at midnight. All classes of motorists weve driving with caution this morning and observance of the limit appeared general. . The first impression is that the limit is working smoothly and resulting in only slight delays to traffic. In the House" of Commons Sir John Gilmour, Home Secretary, replying to a series of questions relating to the enforcement of the 30 miles speed limit for motorists in built-up areas, said plain clothes police would be used not to trap unwary motorists, but to act as a general check on excessive speed, particularly overtaking by exceeding the limit. DRIVERS ON BEST BEHAVIOUR LONDON, 19th March. Drivers were on their best behavionur on the first day of the speed limit, many being content with 25 miles an hour. The so-called “gangsters” in police cars had relatively few opportunities of exercising their authority’, but generally speaking motorists willingly collaborated with the police.
