FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

DEMONSTRATION BY BRIGADE ON THURSDAY Although little has been made so far of the fact that this is Fire Prevention Week, the Nelson Brigade lias circularised business firms with printed precaution notices and lias arranged for one of the engines to proceed through the town at various times bearing appropriate notices. In addition a cleaning up campaign has been made. To-morrow afternoon at about 5.30 o'clock, the brigade will give a demonstration, similar to last year’s successful effort, on the Masonic Hotel corner, and the public is invited to witness the proceedings.

FIRE PREVENTION FOR BUSINESS PREMISES

Tlie following is one of the notices which has been circularised to business premises:

CLEANLINESS AND ORDER

1. Don’t allow accumulations of rubbish under benches, in cupboards, behind radiators, or anywhere else. 2. Keep shipping anil packing rooms free from litter. Keep packing material in bins.

3. Keep oily waste floor-cleaning cloths and other greasy material in metal containers or destroy after use. 4. See that piles of stock or other obstructions do no block doorways. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT 1. Have all broken fixtures or loosened wires repaired. 2. See that electric cords are not looped over nails, or in contact with anything. 3. See that only standard fuses are used. 4. Turn off the current from electric irons, radiators, etc. when not in use, and remove plug from socket. f>. See that celluloid and other inflammable material is kept away from lights or heaters. (i. Arrange electric radiators so that they cannot be brought in dangerous proximity to woodwork, wastepaper baskets, etc. HEATING 1. Keep gas rings and heaters permanently fixed, with woodwork protected by non-inflammable material and air-space. 2. Use ,spark-proof screens with all open fires. / 3. Keep chimneys and fireplaces clean and rubbish and inflammable material well away from fires. 4. See that ashes are always placed in a metal container outside the building. Arrange for someone to look round the building for fire at closing time.
