AURORA SAILING CLUB

On Saturday the Aurora Sailing Club .liekF two raws for trophies presented by people interested in the club. There was a light sea breeze blowing which was very uncertain with “oatspaws” coming down periodically. Most boats kept well over to the Boulder Bank and took the benefit of these gusts but those who kept close to the wharf to benefit by the tide missed them. Tlie first race was for the Sappho Cold Medal, presented by Mr J. J. Cook, an old commodore and a life member of the club. This race, which was open to “B” class boats, was won by the Rose, sailed by G. Dobson. The scratch boat, Snipe, sailed by J. Baigcnt, came second arid put up fastest time with Ihr oinins. The Moana, sailed by A. Smallbone, came third, and the Sea Mew, sailed by K. Weldon, was fourth. There were seven entries for this rae e and no mishaps occurred t« any of the competitors. The second race was for a water colour marine painting presented by Mr J. Carlton, of Wellington. This race was open to “A” class boats and attracted 12 entries. The Gappy Ricks sailed by W. Johnson, came in first to secure her first win of the season, 'lhe Valkyrie, sailed by M. Collins, was second, closely followed by the Alison, sailed by .T. Baird, and the Rodney sailed by J. Harris. There was a good fight for second, no less than four boats battling to gain the place. The finish of the “A” class race was spectacular for there was not a minute difference between the first six boats, 'the club’s handieapper, Mr H. Wilson, is to be congratulated bn bis handicapping for the day. The onlv mishap recurred on the Alison when she .•anied away her rudder. .She carried on with an oar, however, and came in second. Fastest time was put up by the Valkyrie with 54mins 48secs. On Sunday the club held another of its popular picnics on Haulashore Island. About forty picnickers were conveyed to the Island by Mr K. Weldon in his boat the Sea Mew whilst others came over in their own boats. Swimming races, a treasure hunt and lolly scrambles were held for the children. The prizes for the treasure hunt were presented by the club while the sweets were kindly donated by Messrs C. 11. Griffin and Sons. During the afternoon the race off for the Aurora Cup was held, the two contestants being the Snipe and the Patricia. A moderate • sea breeze was blowing which freshened slightly during the race.
