THE GREATEST TELESCOPE

The great Wilson telescope, which has revolutionised our knowledge of the heavens, has a disc of 100 inches. The new telescope now under construction will he exactly double that size. Already we know that the heavens are a mass of self-generating lights, at distances varying from 4£ to hundreds of millions of light years away. What the new telescope will reveal will he a revelation. The first disc, which took seven months to cool, was found to have a flaw, so had to be recast. Last March another casting was made. After the cooling period this huge mass of 20 tons is to be held in reserve, while a second casting is made in the same mould, to lessen the risk of failure. If successful, this huge 20-ton mass will be returned to the oven for another year, to remove possible flaws and strains. Then will follow the cutting into correct shape and final perfecting of the great 200-inch lens. What it will reveal, when finally in use, is beyond human conception.
