ORDERLY ONLOOKERS
TRIBUTE BY POLICE COM* , MISSIONED The orderly behaviour of the Nelson people during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester was favourably commented on by the Commissioner of Police, Mr W. G. Wohlmann, • who said that at both the civic reception and at the children’s gala, he had been greatly pleased by the manner in which the spectators had kept their ranks and remained inside the barriers; the orderliness of the people in no way detracted from the rousing reception given His Royal Highness. Such co-operation with the police and others controlling the traffic was greatly appreciated. Nelson has never before seen such a strong force of police officials and constables in the city at one time as was in evidence for Saturday’s ceremony. The local force was augmented by a detachment which arrived by boat from Wellington in the morning, and a further special squad accompanied, the Royal party from Blenheim, making a total of about 50 all told. However, the crowds gave the police no difficulty, and no untoward happenings were reported. Among the police officers present were the N.Z. Commissioner, Mr W. G. Wohlmann; special service officer, Detective Inspector W. Reilly; Inspector J. Lander (Wellington), Inspector J. Cummings (Wellington), all of whom are accompanying the Royai party on the tour; Inspector F. Lewin (Nelson), Sen-ior-Sergeant J. Dempsey (Wellington), Senior-Sergeant C. Peterson (Nelson), Sergeant P. Boulton (North Dunedin), and Sergeant C. C. Dunford (Dargaville). There were 28 constables and six detectives in addition to the local staff.
