Defying the State Government the master bakers here decided to increase the price of bread over the chunter from 4|d a loaf to 4:jd from to-morrow, which means that most people will pay sd. Tlie increase is alleged to be due to the flour tax which operates to-niorro\V. INCREASE AT MELBOURNE (Received Uh January, 10.10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day., Following the enforcement of the flour tax the price of bread increased by a halfpenny to 41(1 a 21b loaf. The Premier, the Rt. Hon. B. S. B. Stevens, stated recently that if the master bakers insisted on increasing the price of bread when the flour tax comes into operation, the State Government would fix tlie price by proclamation. Cabinet lias given the Premier power to take any action he thinks necessary.
