A repetition of the fierce gales which preceded the November floods was experienced throughout the week-end when a storm of cyclonic fury swept the State, causing many additional thousands of pounds worth of damage. The whole eastern bay side was subjected to a tremendous battering by the gale which demolished the remains of piers, retaining walls, baths and a large amount of repair work which had been put in hand since the last storm. Six yachts were brown ashore and damaged. Shipping was seriously disorganised. So severe was the storm that dangerous waters at Port Phillip Heads were almost impassable; and five steamers which left Melbourne on Saturday are still sheltering in Port Phillip Bay. RAIN AT SYDNEY ALL SPORT POSTPONED SYDNEY, sth January. All forms of sport except the swimming championships were postponed today owing to drenching rain.
