RICHMOND

BOROUGH AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL The ordinary meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr 11. Warren Kelly), Councillors Polglaze, Haycock, Poole, Tuffnell, McGlasheD, and Palmer. Accounts totalling £lB9 Os lOd wer passed for payment. The Foreman’s report was adopted as follows: The concrete kerbing from York Place to Salisbury road corner has been completed and the footpath filled in with clay filling and gravelled. Since last meeting the grader has been worked on the main Highways twice. The traffic lines at the corners of Salisbury road, Gladstone road and Queen street have been repainted, also the bus stop lines. Two seats have been erected, one in Wcnsley road and one in Lower Queen street. The mowing machine has been used at the Cemetery, also Queen street and Lower Queen stroet, and the Recreation Ground cricket outfield, have been cut. The holes in the bitumen in Queen street and Salisbury road have been attended to. The iveeds have been taken off the footpaths and watertablcs in Queen street, Lower Queen street, Upper Queen street, and Salisbury road. Thirty-six yards of gravel have been carted into the Borough yard with the dump truck. The watertable in Crescent street where the water pipe was showing has been filled in with broken metal and blinding. The Foreman reported that the reservoir was overflowing on Saturday prior to the rain Tho State Advances Department wrote re the Loans Conversion and of-

fering to supply necessary debentures and instalment tables. The Town Clerk was authorised to secure these from the Department. The Public Trust Office also wrote re loan conversion and made' various suggestions which were agreed to by the Council. On the motion of the Deputy-Mayor it was resolved that in order to prevent delay in the loan conversion the Mayor and. Town Clerk be authorised to confirm and supply all forms and certificates required and to sign on behalf of the Council all such forms, their action to be confirmed at a subsequent meeting of the Council. The Holy Trinity Church vestry wrote thanking the Council for the improvements carried out at the corner of Church and Dorset streets. The Nelson City Council notified that it had been decided to permit the City Traffic Inspector to assist in traffic control on Show Day. The City Council also wrote re the visit of the Duke of Gloucester asking the Council to send a representative to occupy the platform at the official welcome It was resolved that the Mayor represent the Council at the function. The Town Clerk read a lengthy circular from the Provincial Progress League urging the general public to patronise tho local railway which otherwise, owing to continued loss, would have to be closed. It was pointed out that in spite of reduced expenditure the operating loss for the year ending March 1934 was £7,443. Should the railway be closed it was estimated that 1,100,000 lorry ton miles would be necessary to transport the quantity of goods carried by the railway. Councillors realised the seriousness of the position and it was resolved to do everything possible to asist- the railway. It was resolved that a letter be forwarded to Mr 11. Atmore, M.P., thanking him for the information supplied from time to time to the Council and for the copies of various acts forwarded. In reply to Councillor Palmer the Mayor stated that in all probability a revaluation of the Borough would be carried out during the coming year.

On Councillor Palmer’s motion it was resolved that six-inch pipes be placed in the ditch opposite the Cemetery g.Tte in order to facilitate the turning of cars. It was resolved that some eighteeninch pipes be placed in the ditch opposite Mr Iluffam’s property, Salisbury road.
