CITY RATES
(To the Editor)
Sir,--May I ask through your columns Sir, what steps our City Council intend to take to reduce rates for the ensuing year? To the ordinary ratepayer there appears ample scope for economy, more particularly in administration. It is to be remembered that the Council employees, received but a 5 per cent. ,cut in salaries and wages. The contemplated reduction of rents makes it incumbent on councillors to see tliat the rates are relatively reduced. The present is not the time for squeamishness on the part of those in authority and a scrutiny of the loans account makes the need for economy more apparent. Perhaps a commission Similar to that responsible for the investigations of the affairs of the Wellington City Council would lie of benefit to Nelson ratepayers. —I am etc., CONCERNED.
