SITUATION FULLY IN HAND STATEMENT IN COMMONS LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ABOLISHED 'British Oflicial Wireless) RUGBY, 12th November. In I lie House of Commons at question time Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, Secretary for the Colonies, made a statement on the recent events in Cyprus. He said: "The situation is now fully in hand. ■ There are in the island two companies of troops and the normal garrison of one compilin'. The naval parties temporarily landed have been withdrawn. The ringleaders have been arrested and ten have been deported. Many other arrests were made. The casualties reported among the civilians are 0 killed and 30 wounded, and there have been 39 cases of injuries to police. The comparatively small number of casualties is a gratifying tribute to the restraint exorcised by the naval and military forces, and by tjic police. “The damage, in addition to the burning of Government House at Nicosia, comprises the destruction of the Comsioner's house and plantation at Limasol, the, destruction of a. bridge, the cutting of telegraph wires in Famagusta district, and the burning of Customs sheds in the village of Pissouri. Damage was also done to a number of village police stations and other Government properly, “The Governor has been informed of (he rebuilding of Government House, which should be rebuilt as soon as possible, and approval lias been given to the principle that the parties found to be responsible for flic damage should be made liable for the cost.
“Letters patent have been approved under which the Legislative Council of Cyprus will cease to exist, and power to make laws is granted to the Governor. These letters patent should he regarded as an emergency measure. It will bo necessary hereafter .to review the whole question of the constitutional future of the island.”
