DOMINION PRODUCE AT HOME

CHRISTCHURCH MAN’S OBSERVATIONS Some interesting details regarding New Zealand products in England are given in. a letter recently received from Mi- L t\ Watkins, of Christchurch, who lias been visiting a number of cen- : res, chiefly in the South of England and Wales. “Every town and most of the villages v.c have been in,” Mr Watkins wrote, “have Now Zealand- meat well advertised, and most of it looks quite equal to best English. Now Zealand butter is not very prominent, but one can get it by asking for it. I have seen New Zealand honey and cheese, but not much. The butter is mostly sold from large blocks, the full size of the ordinary butler-box. Only in Torquay did we' see Now Zealand butter done up in single pounds, in cartons. Tradesmen are rather incensed just now about Russian butter, which is being dumped into England just at present at a much lower price than other brands.”

TRADE CONDITIONS In another part of the same letter, Mr Watkins remarks: “I should not like to live in England—the taxes are dreadful. We in New Zealand do not know what taxes are. There in general depression in South Wales. The collieries and iron and steel works are working only part time, and half of them are idle. In Sheffield, whore we were yesterday, all the big iron works seem to be idle. One sees, perhaps, one or two chimney stacks smoking where thero should be fifty or sixty.”
