News has been received of the death of Mr Eustace Lane, of Kiwi Station, about five miles south of Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay, which occurred last week. Mr Lane took a prominent part in public affairs in Hawke’s Bay, and it was announced some time ago that he intended standing for one of the Hawke’s Bay seats at the coming general election for Parliament.
After forty years’ service in the Post and Telegraph Department, the Telegraph Superintendent at Wellington, Mr H. W. Allan, has retired on superannuation. At a large gathering telegraph officers and the staff bade him farewell, and after presenting him with a number of valuable gifts wished him the best of good luck in his retirement. To Mrs Allan the staff made a gift of an afternoon teaset. During his official career Mr Allan held responsible positions in many parts of the Dominion. — Press Association.
The death occurred at Blenheim on Saturday of Mr E. Mead, aged 80 years, ex-secretary of the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, ex-secretary of the Marlborough Club, and a prominent business man.—Press Association. A Blenheim Press Association telegram reports the death of Mr John James Winsbury White, a very old resident of Marlborough, and formerly clerk of the Marlborough Provincial Council and ex-district agent for the Public Trustee.
