An effort L.» save the life of :l 'buy aged 15 by Hie administration i»f antitetanus serum was commented upon by members of the Auckland Hospital Hoard yesterday. The boy was in the hospital 17 days, subsequently passing away. Over one million units of serum, costing i'.!)2, were used in an endeavour to save his lite. "People sometimes wonder how tho expenses run up, but this hoy's parents are unable to pay anything," said tho chairman, Mr W. Wallace. "Everything was done to save his life." In reply to a question regarding the effectiveness of the serum, Dr. Maguire. Medical Superintendent, said: "Unfortunately the boy came in too late. The serum was found to be effective as a preventive." lie added that lockjaw was fairly common in Auckland, the microbe being present in the volcanic Soil. The. '"Herald," in the course of an editorial, stales Dr. Maguire's reference to serum as a preventive, "that there is a hint of special value to he taken to heart wherever there exist conditions increasing the risk of this trouble. The implied warning ought not to be regarded as that of an alarmist, but as one of commonsense urgency. Forewarned is forearmed."
