VISIT TO JAPAN
NEW ZEALANDER'S IMPRESSIONS
(Hy TetoKraph—Special to "Tho Mail")
AUCKLAND, 20th November. "They call if the, land of the. chrysanthemum, but il, was a land without (lowers as fur as we. saw it," said Mr 11. Coldie, one of Auckland's leading floriculturists, who visited Japan to attend the Rotary Conference, and returned by the Aorangi yesterday. "Wo were there in the off season," said Mr Coldie, "and we saw neither chrysanthemums nor flowering cherries, although from the groves of "the latter one could imagine what a beautiful sight, it would be when the flowers were' in full bloom. On the hills of Japan the maples were beginning t.o lint with red, and again one could visualise what a beautiful picture autumn foliage would make.
"We saw their much-boomed Fuji Yama," said Mr Coldie, in referring to the scenic attritions, "but there was no snow on it, and although it is symmetrical it cannot hold a. candle to old Egmonl." .Mr Goldie said what, was really impressive was the inland sea, as narrow in some places as Auckland Harbour, with sampans and junks always on the. move. Mr Coldie said that in Japan there was an insatiable demand for literal lire deal. ing with New Zealand* and tho small amount of literature which the .New Zealand delegates had with them was quickly distributed. There was not the same demand for literature dealing with Australia. He was informed that the courtesy extended visitors in Australia and New Zealand, particularly the warm-hearted reception given to the. crews and officers of the Japanese warships when visiting New Zealand had created a very fine impression, and the stories of New Zealand carried back had created a big desire to know much more about tho little country in the south.
