BULOW—PIANIST, CONDUCTOR AND WIT
Hans Von BuTow was almost as famous for his wit as for his musical genius. Ono of his remarks was to the effect that "ciilics know everything and do nothing," and it was he who originated tho well-known description of the tenor voice as "not a voice but a disease." To a pianist who insisted on playing io him i:c paid : "I have heard Liszt, I have heard Euhenstein. But I have never known a pianist who perspired as you do. : ' Tliis remark is on a par with that nf Brahms to ;v composer who had anxiously awaited his verdict.
