NOTES FROM RICCARTON
PREPARING FOR NATIONAL MEETING
CHRISTCHURCH, 11th August. At Riccarton to-day Tuki, Pouri, and Matu set out to school together once round over tho steeplechase fences. Matu fell at the second obstable, the sod wall, and Pouri ran off at the second fence of the double. . Several attempts were made to get Matu to jump properly after he was caught. He refused repeatedly and his showing was very poor. Tuki fenced in his usual finished manner, but Pouri's performance was nothing to enthuse about. He runs down every fence and is inclined to peck on landing. The best part of his jumping is the smart way in Which he gets away from his fences. There is not any double in the National course where it is possible for him to get off the second fence. Rang! Sarto vcas much too good for Pink Rose in a nout over four flights of hurdles. Prompter, who set off with them, fell at the second fence, and his owner has decided to pull the black gelding out of his jumping engagements. Royal Damon beat Kaiti by a good two lengths over seven furlongs with light weights up. The' time was a tick under 1.30. It was the best seen during the morning. Royal Damon could not have done much better. He pulled up well, but Kaiti was apparently in need ol a gallop. Volant, Bisox, Royal Saxon and Taboo were tried out together over six furlongs. They finished in the order named, the time being 1.17. This was a smart performance on Volant's part, as he won easily by three lengths from Bisox who \\*ui four clear of Royal Saxon with Taboo another six lengths away. All four carried light-weights.
Tarleton, Wiltshire and Beau Cavalier galloped once round with welterweights up. Tarleton finished a little in front of Wiltshire with Beau Cavalier beaten. It was run in 1.45, and the performances of Tarleton and Wiltshire were good. Beau Cavalier's poor showing may lie 'Recounted for --by the fact that he'is,a;bad worker. Scion had Steel Bar well beaten at the end of a round over the hurdles. He jumped well but the pace wns not right on. The Babe was given a solid working gallop and Solferite did similar work. ° Red Fuchsia pulled up well after galloping some distance. Peneus was given similar work. Both geldings are very fit.
