WHOLE TOWNS WIPED OUT

(Received 13th August, 11.5 a.m.) N NEW YORK, 12th August. Four persons were killed in tropical storms which struck North and South Carolina to-day, after working their way from the West Indies through Florida and Georgia last week, and doing damage amounting to many millions of dollars here, wiping out whole towns, uprooting orchards, and flooding wide areas in the rich Piedmont section of Carolina, which had" been badly hit. To-night flood conditions caused by Unprecedented rains menace several communities, are crippling communications, disrupting power services, and paralysing railway and highway traffic.
