SENATOR WHEELER’S INDICT MENT
(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)
WASHINGTON, April 9. Tho Democrats moved swiftly to vindicate Mr Wheeler. The Senate adopted a resolution to investigate Mr Wheeler’s counter-charge that the indictment was a Republican conspiracy to ruinj his reputation and abort the Senate’s Daugherty enquiry. Mr Walsh who introduced the resolution, defended Mr Wheeler and branded the- indictment as a political trick to divert attention from the committee's serious disclosures.
Mr Wheeler, in bitterly indignant speech, declared the indictment was one oi the most damnable conspiracies ever hatched in the United States saying: “My client was an independent operator who was being robbed by big oil interests holding Government leases, but I never appeared on his behalf in any federal department. I am not asking for sympathy, hut want the Senate to know the truth.” Chairman Brookhart meanwhile stated that the Daugherty committee's investifations will proceed with a force and determination it had never known before.
