MEAT SHIPMENTS

A FREIGHT CONCESSION

For some time past the Now Zealand Government has been in communication with the Imperial authorities on the question of freight rates fop frozen meat and other produce snipped to Great Britain. “These rates are on a very nign basis when compared with those in operation prior to the war (states the Prime Minister) ; and although it has been fully recognised that the cost ox running refrigqgpted ships had been greatly inreased, the additional harden imposed upon producers was so heavy that it was realised that every effort should be made to relieve the position as far as possible. A cable has now come to hand from the High Commissioner, who advises that the Ministry for Food has informed him that revised rates for carriage_ of private meat to the United Kingdom has been fixed as follows; l|d per lb. for mutton, 2d per lb for )ambs, IJd per lb for beef; all plus 5 per cent. ‘ ‘This means a reduction of 5 per cent, on the rates previously fixed, to which the Government had taken exception.- In those rates the charges for mutton, lamb and beef respectively were the same as quoted above, .but with an additional 10 per cent, instead of 5 per cent, as now established. The Government is in further communication with the High Commissioner on this subject of freight rates, m view ot the heavy burden which is still imposed upon producers/*
