HOMES FOR WORKERS
FROM general inquiries we find that the housing question is still very aeute in and about the city. The Department of Labour, who have control iof the new Workers’ Dwellings Act. are using their best endeavours lo relieve the position as far as possible We understand that a number o? bouses already erected have been purchased by the Department on behalf of workers who have made themselves acquainted with and taken advantage nf the provisions of the Act. Although it may be good for a few who have done
Iso, this doe« not relieve the i housing question, and what, in ’our opinion, should really take , place is the erection of new buildings by the Department. At the present time four dwellings are being erected, and the contractor is making very satjisfactory progress. Mr Tyson, |the local representative of the ['Department, informs us that .there are a. fair number mf applicants for workers’ dwellings, and that the Housing Board is busy endeavouring to fbd some
'means whereby the cost of erection can be 1 reutieed. It is to be hoped that this will eume about in the near future and that the .erection of workers' dwellings |wil] be pushed forward in the j city. It should be clearly understood that the Act applies to country districts and ean be laken advantage of by residents *in the country. It is useless | ;Or people to complain and do Nothing. Application dumb! be I made lo tin? Government. and this will furnish evid .nee cl the need that exists.
