VISIT OF LABOUR MISSION FAILURE OF PRESENT METHODS (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association). LONDON, Feb. 16. It is understood that the Labourites, following the visit to Ireland, will report that they are profoundly impressed by the irrefutable evidence of the failure of the present methods of government from Dublin Castle, and will outspokenly criticise the repressive measures to enforce a system of Government not harmonising with the sentiments of the great mass of the people. It is expected that the Parliamentary Labour Party will endorse the visitors’ declaration.
The House (of Commons read a second time the War Emergencies Continuance Bill, comtinumg modified Defence of the Realm Regulations, Lord Robert Cecil, replying to Irish opposition, said he would always support; Government measures intended to suppress crime, but be doubted whether the form of coercion adopted in. Ireland was host suited to diminish crime.
Mr O'Connor‘o amendment to omit a longer period of operation of the Act in Ireland than in England was negatived by 162 votes to 56.
Six armed men during the forenoon, held up a policeman carrying a mail hag in the busiest part of Cork and escaped with the mail bag.
(Ree. Feb. 19 9.5 a.m) LONDON, Feb. 18. Alderman Kelly, Lord Mayor of Dublin, has been released from Wormwood Scrubs, owing to bad health. He was taken to a private hospital.
