Reference was made by the Minister for Mines in an address to the Town Planning Conference to-day, to the housing conditions in West Coast mining centres, and an indication was given that remedial measures would have to be undertaken. He said that an exhaustive report he received points out that much of the indusi - . .al unrest and di«witisf**otion of the miners may be attributed to the sordidness of their housing conditions .and the monotony of home life., The question ol providing adequate housing, with due regard to social conditions, must l.e promptly faced and answered. The problem! to be solved in the mining industry was part of the problem of housing and town planning generally, and the result of the present conference’s deliberations should be of material assistance in arriving at a solution. / -i , The Hon.
