Tho usual monthly meeting of the Richmond Borough' 'Council was held on Tuesday, 9th July, at 7.30 p.m. Present: The Mayor, Ors. Crops'. Halt. Ingram, Hart, "Win and Thorn. Before proceeding with the business o£ the evening the Mayor referred to the death of Mrs Best ajid moved a vote of .sympathy to Mr Beet and family, which was carried, all present standing as a mark of respect.

Accounts were passed for payment as follows :—General Account. £l2O 5s 5d ; Water Supnlv Account £1 3s 3d ; total £l2l 8s Bd'.

Tho Committee appointed to draw up the duties and fix the -salary of a sanitary inspector landed in their report and recommendations, which were adopted. Correspondence was received from 1 : — Booth Mr.Bona.ld, notifying the Council that the stone-crusher had been shipped, a.nd forwarding packing "hp of same.

From the Railway District Engineer, stating that the land between Coleman's shop and the Railwav ♦Vn-je was ahe property of the Borough. From the Education Board, Nelson re an annual contribution to the Nelson Technical School.—(Resolved that the matter stand xni abeyance for the present.

From a resident of Queen-street re water at front gate.—(Received. __ and matter left in the hands of the Works Committee with power to act. From Mr Jas. Mack-ay re Holdaway's Creek. —Received. A number of building permits and water extension's' were granted.—lt wa-S resolved that the Town Clerk he empowered to grant permits. From Mr Sutton re drainage m be deferred pending improvements in the locality. . . From the dog tax •collector resigning the appointment. The Foreman reported that the wet weather had delayed gravelling on-Hill-street, where there was about 50 yards to be finished, which was at present in a bad state. The water-pipes at Coleman's, Hawkeworth.'s, and Lucas' have been . inspected and found quite tight. A small flip has come down at the Reservoir, which will require cleaning away before the summer. The blackberries 'and gorse on the east side of Lower Salisbury-road require cutting to enable the ditch <to be cleanied out, also the ditch in front of the Cemetery requires cleaning out. The ban kof the ditch in Beach-road was washed away about two or three feet by the recent flood, and requires atenltion. The fence at the Reserve in Beach-road requires repairing. The road in Water-street requires three or j four furrows ploughed out and a few loads of gravel, as it is rin. a bad state lin places. The report was received. Resolved that the willow trees on Hill-street be referred to the WorksCommittee; that notice be sent to the owners of properties in Salisbury 'oad to have the growth on their frontages removed, that the ditch at the Cemetery be cleaned out; that- repairing of the bank in Water-Street be left in j the hands of the Works 'Committee; that the necessary repairs to the fence at the Reserve be carried out; ,hat the Foreman carry out the work in Hillstreet water-table: that the road cir°site Beatson'-* Rate be raised about 18 inches, and the water-table deepened to atop the water overflowing and coming down Queen-street; that 1 - the matter of interviewing Mr Claydeo and the Church authorities re .widening of Dor-set-street at the Sunday School be left an the hands of the .(Mayor and Town' Clerk. It was also resolved that all the Council visit the culvert _in Queen-street with a view to getting rid of flood water; that the matter of acquiring the frontage offered by Mrs Lusty, the formation of the footpath and watertable on the frontages adjoining, be left in the hand* of the Works Committee. (It was also resolved that this Goun^' 1 strongly protests against,the very unsatisfactory state of the electric light in Richmond, and unless, an. improvement is made in the lighting in the immediate future, it will be necessary to take some further action; that the Mayor, Or. Ingram, and the Town* Clerk be a committee to interview the Electric Supply Co. in connection with the lamps, lights, etc. . , R-esloved that Cr. Hart bo apowited to interview 'Mr Croucher re allowing his gravel pit to be used by the Council as a tip. . that a special meeting beheld on the. 23rd 1 July, to deal with the nightsoil system and appoint. a sanitary inspector. ; that the leak at the Reservoir, be left with the V. nter I Committee to deal with in tin . ;::th of .August.
