At the Farmers' Conference, Mr Beeby said the political machine had degraded politics till there was no ; semblance of democracy. The machine was denying the right of a substantial majority to political representation. The only* way to overcome this was by proportional representation. The meeting decided on the following planks as a platform.:—Electoral reform ; national insurance; decentralisation ; a vigorous policy of immigration; extension of railway/,- closer settlement; extension and definition of Federal powers.
