MAITAI LANDS.
(To the Fditor.)
Sir—On Wednesday the ratepayers win be called upon to settle the question regarding the Maitai lands. The Crty Council are rightly or wrongly doing ' Nothing to influenoo the voters either for or against the proposal. Personally, I think the question is such an important one and the object so desirable in the best 1 interests of the city that it would ;be quite proper for the Council to use its .influence in favour of caiu-yong the poll. As a Councillor and as a citizen I am strongly in favour of securing the right to use the Maitai for bathing purposes. Now-, Sir. there is no need to point out the importance of every boy and girl learning to swim. It means saving of life, amove ■healthy and robust people, to sav nothing of the enjoyment to the i bathers. The cost of securing the two bathing holes' even if the Council had to bear the whole, will not be a large amount, which is, reduced to less than half by the Government subsidy and a donation by a worthy citizen. For the benefit of our boys and girls and of those to follow, ratepayers should vote for at least two of the proposals. In regard to the 16 acres, well, don't turn it down without due consideration. We have a majaritv in favour of the proposals* —-if thev make a point of voting the poll will be "carried. However, there is an opposition to fight—and it is up to all to do oiu- "best to secure for all time the right to use the bathing holes. I am, etc., E. AVEBLEY.
