CORRESPONDENCE.
s FARMERS AND THEIR AGENTS. TO THE EDITOR. 3 Sir, With reference to youi* leadine article of last night, I infer that 'thi '. Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Com r pany has its headquarters in Welling ton Do you think it* is wise for the I farmr.rs in this locality to pour intc Welington, even to above Company, al \ they have to send away? Has not Nel- . son itself the unique position of distributing centre to markets so near as the . Greymouth, Westport, Wanganui, and , possibly, for some produce, Auckland ! districts, through its practically dailj , steamer service? The early ripening of its tomato crop alone gives it a posi l tion of some importance. ;Why shoulc 3 not the buying be done here by thesi r agents? Or, as an alternative, could the j local brokers use. the telegraph some , what more freely, ascertaining the dailj s requirements elsewhere, and, shipping . direct, save unnecessary transhipping . and cartage in Wellington? Buyers, or , behalf of the ultimate consumers, might . in time be induced to frequent loca! , markets, and bear a share in the risks j of getting the commodities home. The . present method throws all these risks . and all the labour of growing the food supplies for the towns upon the farm- . ers. I I am, yours etc., OPEN MARKET. Ntlson, Spt. 22, '09.
