Millar, Minister of Railways Wellington Sir. — An advertisement lias appear ed in tho Nelson papors since the last meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board inviting public tenders for dredging in Nelson Harbour (esti. mated quantity 44000 yards), to be sent in to the Railway Department at Wellington by tho 21st of April inst.. which will be before the mat. ter can be brought formally under tho notice of Hie Board. Although I have nut seen any specification of the proposed dredg. ing. I have been advised by intend, ing tenderers (who have applied to be informed where spoil may bo de. posited) that the major portion of it is specified to be deposited within THE HABBOCR AS MAY BE DIRECTED BY THE IIAEBOUEMASTEII. Under these circumstances, and be. fore any tender is accepted, I feel it my duty to advise you that the Har. bour Master has informed me that he could not undertako the responsi. bility of directing any position inside hie harbour where any large quantity of spoil could be safely de. posited, while the Board's experi. onced Engineer and Dredgo Master who have carried out the work of tho new harbour entrance, both definitely advise that there is no tlace inside the harbocr where any further considerable quantity of unsecured spoil could be deposited without causing serious ultimate injury to the har. bour. There remains however at least one means by which the said spoil could be effectively disposed of aiid utilised to advantage, and fortunately at a cost not greater than I bat of carrying and depositing it in a new position inside the harbour.— Kind regards.
