Is, with 7a costs for riding a bicycle on a footpath on the 18th inst., tbe former in Waimea Road and the latter in Waiineastreet, The offence was admitted in each case, but it was pleaded that the roads were in a bad state on the day in question. The adjourned meeting of fruitgrowers in connection with the formation of a new Association wi'l be held in the City Council Chamber to-morrow evening, commencing at 7-45. The Committee will meet at 7 o clock sharp. Tt will bo remembered that during the Royal visit celebrations in Wellington last month the Premier, on behalf of the colony, handed the Duke of York a large nugget of gold, for presentation to King Edward. It was slated at the time that the nugget had been found in the Baton i river (in the Nelson district), and not a few people were curious to know when and by whom the lucky find was made. From inquiries made ive bplieve there is no doubt that the nugget \s th« j one discovered at the Baton over ten years ago by Mr I hos. Scaifo (at present residing in Nelson) and the late Mr Alex. Mackenzie. The. nugget, which weighed 320/s, had the exact form of a child's foot, and was purchased in April, lypi, from the original owners by Mr Arthur Tregea for 25. It was afterwards exhibited for a time at the Commercial Hotel, where it was viewed by some hundreds of people, and a reference to the " Mail " file shows that it was then described as " The Great Carbine " (late "My Dream ") nugget. The'valuable specimen was afterwards sold to a Blenheim resident, y.nd it appears to have subsequently passed into the possession af the Government. It is alao started that it was exhibited at the World's Pair at Chicago in 1882. A somewhat singular ioincidence is that Mr Mackenzie, one of She discoverers of the nugget, died at ;he Nelson Hospital on June 24th, within i few days of it being placed in Royal mads as a present to the Sovereign of ,Ik' Empire.
