THE VINDICATION OF GENERAL BULLER.
PRESENTATION OP A SWORD OP HONOUR. THE LADYSMITH CAMPAIGN. A FORLORN HOPE. LONDON, Oct. 19. General Sir Kedrers Buller, who conducted the campaign for the relief of Lartysuiith during the Boer ivar, in accepting a sword of honour presented by the residents of Pietertnaritzberg, referred to the unparallolled difficulties which marked the beginning of the campaign. He slated that he refused Sir Erelyn Wood's generous offer to serre under him because he regarded tho relief of Ladysmith as a forlorn hope, which it would havo been cowardly to have let Sir Evelyn Wood share. He admitted that he had rightly lost the chief command after the battle of Colenso, and added that no soldiers had preciously undergone such tremendous strain iu facing fire day after day.
