CHINATOWN ALMOST DESTROYED. A BLESSING IN DISGUISE. AUCKLAND, This Kay. News by the San Francisco mail states that China Town, Honolulu, was almost swept away by lire on January ".'2. The outbreak had its origin in the firing of a plague spot in block 15, but tho wind rising, the flames swept tbe whole block and also blocks Ito '.*. Some idea of the extent of the conflagration may be gathered from the fact that 17**0 Chinese, 1025 Japanese, and about 1000 Hawaiins wero refuged within the walls of the Kawaiahao church-yard. These figures did not include the Japanese and Chinese women and children in the church building One result of ttbe fire will be effectively to check lhe plague.
