WESTPORT DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

The report of tbe Committee appointed to consider ways and means for a district high school at H'estport was read at the meeting of tho Nelson Rduc ition Board to-day. The Committee beg to submit the following estimate of income and expenditure, from whioh it will be seen that with the help of tbe grant from the Board of School Commissioners a High School may be carried on with even a minimum of 15 in attendance : Receipts (estimated) from School Commissioners £180; Jrom fees (say 10 at £5) £50 1 ditto (say 5 at £4) £20; from saving on present staff £40 ; total 4,200. Expenditure (estimated), Head master's salary £250 ; incidental expenses (say £10) 3 total £2flo. c The Committee make the following recommendations :— (1) Thafc the soheme of a district High Sohool at Westport be tried for 13 months; (2) That bead master, who mnst be a graduate of some University be advertised for at a salary of £050 P er annum and houae j (3) That the present head teacher be offered the position of first assistant at a salary of £200 per annum, without house j (4) Should the present head teacher decline to accept the appointment suggested, a firat assistant be advertised for at a salary of £180 per annum ; (5) That as in any case an addition to the Boys* School would shortly be required, a new room be at onoe erected at a cost not exceeding £250, to be used as a ■olass room for the higher subjects 5 (6} That the quarterly fees for tuition be £1 for children under 12 years ef age, and £1 5s for children over that age.
