NELSON ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

To the Editor of "The Evening Mail."

Sir—l read with much interest the artiole which appeared in your Saturday's issue with reference to the Acclimatisation Society. There is no doubt that the Society has done a great deal to add to the attractions of Nelson, and it is very disheartening to hear from time to time' of the numerous act3 of poaching that take place, irrespective of the seasons. I do not know whether the (advisability of offering substantial rewards for the conviction of offenders has been thought of, but if not, it might be worth consideration.

I quite concur in your views as to the introduction of salmon into the Maitai. It is difficult to see what Bpecial advantages this river has over other rivers in the south of this Island, where tho experiment does not appear to have been a success. No doubt the Committee appointed by the Society will take the best means of ascertaining from other partß of the colony whether there is any probability of the fish doing any good here, or whether it would be better to turn them out in a larger river, where they would get the benefits of snow water and more tributaries than the Maitai affords. Our river is almost perfect for trout, and it would seem a pity to deprive anglers of the benefit of a season in order to try an experiment, whioh, to say the least, is very doubtful.

Mr Tinline, who has acted most generously in the matter, would, I am sure, be the last man to wish the Committee to take a step involving so much responsibility, without mature consideration — especially when it is remembered how much the funds of the Societj would sutler. — I am, etc,

ANGLER.
