A man named Antonio VVett was fined 3a Gel at die Magistrate's Court to-day for tethering a horse on the Port road on June Gth. The horse was tethered in the evening to one of the enclosures in which the trees are protected.

An open meeting of the Loyal Marine Lodge was held last evening, Bro, Stewart, C.T., presiding. A miscellaneous programme was presented, and among other items which were much appieciated was a dialogue by Miss Lines and Mr Milroy. A collection in aid of a distressed settler was taken up.

A meeting of the Nelson Aid Society was held yesterday afternoon, the Bishop of Nelson presiding. Tho Treasurer (Mr R. Snodgrass) reported that since last meeting he had received the following donations :— Mrs R. Lucas, 10s j Mr Charles Jones, £1 ; Mr C. Hunter-Brtwn, £3 ; Mrs Franzen, 10s; Mr R. Snodgrass, 10s j and tho Rev. Astloy Cooper (per Mrs H. D. Jackson), £'2. It was stated that more funds would be needed for the winter months, and it was resolved to aak for annual subscriptions.

The Nelson Land Board resolved at its meeting yesterday to rescind its resolution of the 6th May, recommending that tho unsurveyed portions of Blocks I and 11, Tapamutu, bo thrown open for solection— minerals being reported thereon.

Messrs Bisley Bros. A Co. will soil by public auction at their rooms, Hardy -St., to-morrow, a quantity of Canterbury potatoes, chaff, dates, r. isms, tea, cornflour, and soap. M, Hibberd were granted, subject to survey. An application by A. E, Langf jrd for a lease in perpetuity wns granted, i n application by H, Whiting for occupation with right of purohase was granted. A > imilar application by J. Gibbons was adjourned to next meeting. Several applications for occupation licenses were postponed; an application by J. Shaw and Sons in respect of 2000 acres back country between Muddy Creek and Wairoa, West Wanganui, was granted; rabbits to bo destroyed to the satisfaction of tho Inspector. Occupation licensee were granted to H. AVestwood, P. Hamilton, E. Jones, and N. Longnoy, ront-free to the last-named applicant in consideration of tho cost of rabbiting. A number of leases were assessed for snlo. WestportNgaka wa u railway extension : — The deficiency in the working of the railway for the year ending 31st March, 1896, amounting to £1714 11s 2d, was apportioned as followB : Mokihinui Coal Co., £828 5s 6d ; Westport-Cardiff Coal Co , £886 5s Bd. Transfers of P. L section, G. F. W. Hickmolt to Buinbold and James, and occupation with right of purchase, H. Baigent to F. H. Baigent wore granted subject to conditions of lease being fulfilled. Resolved, that tho Commissioner writo to Mr Shephard, M L.C., inquiring the price of a strip of land required to give access to Mr Brown'B land, Gordon.

At the last meeting of the Nelson Fruitgrowers' Association one member said that Nelson was not a good fruit-growing district. This statement bus been challenged, and at the meeting of the Horticultural Society last evening Mr B. H. Moller, in addition to reading a paper in winch reference was made to successful fruit-growing in Nelson, exhibited a quantity of excellent locally grown fruit. The exhibits included some lino lemons grown by Mr Lightbnnd and Captain Walker, persimmons grown by Mr F, Hamilton, and a choice lot of apples grown by Mr Franklyn and Mr Woolf, Kiwaka. These applee , which were taken from the shops of Messrs Mo'ler and Atmnre, were said to bo equal in qua'ity to any of those shown at the Intercolonial Fruit Show. A dish of Charles Downing potatoes, grown by Mr Sheather of Brook street, was also exhibited hy Mr Moller. A kind of vegetable known as a cho-ko, from Queensland, was exhibited as a novelty.

The Bank of New South Wales is notifying its customers that after Ist September it will not receive worn or defaced silver coins.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Nelson City Council will be held this evening at the Council Chamber.

The following will represrnt the Central School in their third championship match against the College 11 to-mor-row ;— Boon, Clipper, Livick, Har.is, liiley, Win, Sanders, Milnor, I'oole, Danioll, St. John, Qunne, Levien, Hunter, and Redgrave; emergencies, King, Pratt, and L, Livick. The Prince Albert Club's second fifteen have withdrawn from the junior competition this season. The referees for the matches to-morrow are: Senior Cup, Alberts v. Nelson, Mr Littlejohn, Third Class Championship College v. Central School, Mr W, A. Dee.
