MOTUEKA HORTICULTURAL SHOW.
0 The above show was hold yesterday in the marque, but owing to the lateness of the season and the heavy rains of the past two days which destroyed the few flowers there .were, it was not nearly so good us in former years. The pot plants were very few but among them wns a beautiful specimen of Farfugiuin Grande shown by Mrs Hurker, and Mrs 13oyes contributed n, very fine Abutilon of the variety known as Boule de Neige. Home very tine Begonias were also shown. (Jut (lowers were fairly well represented ; the Dahlias from Misses V and M Cook were large and of excellent form. Chrysanthemums were anything but like tho.se exhibited at usual Chrysanthemum allows. Basket, bouquet and wreaths as usual were plentiful and beautifully arranged, those sent in by Miss Hurst- ; house deserve special mention. .Some very nice Kerns were shown, especially a lovely specimen of l'latycerium Alcicorne from Mrs Manoy, the same lady also sending some pretty plants of Draccna l'umila a rather rare form of the native : Cabbage tree. ! The native department whs very poorly '■ represented, a nice little collection uf very pretty native Ljuhcus was shown by Miss ! Olive Uroughiiui, and also Fucnsia Prosi tmta in fruit. No doubt the wet weather i prevented the collecting of natlvo dowers and berries which has hitherto been quite a feature in the autumn show. Fruit was very good and clean and in i in groat variety. Apples of course being • in the ascendant as to quality and variety, 1 and we have rarely seen such splendid i specimens as was here exhibited. Messrs ' Ellis, Chapman, Tutbury, Herrick, and I others, all competing with excellent fruit. I 1 A special exhibit of apples was sent in by ■ Mr James Chapman consisting of over 50 • varieties elicited great cleanlinc-is. ' Plums were not so good as in Conner 1 shows, cither iv quantity or quality. Of grapes there was but one exhibit from Mr Ellis, but they were really good. The ■ loujons and oranges from Messrs Chapman, ; Drtuiiiifoml and Thorpe were as usual very line. ; We were very glad to see an improvement in the quality and quantity of vegetables at this show, all of which \\ ere shown i in excellent condition. The exhibits of Potatoes was large und good, representing many of the best varieties in Now 1 land. Home produce, which always should be a special feature at a country show, w.is well to the fore. Jams and jellios bright and clear, and butter of excellent colour was ■ well set up ; also sponge andcunant cakes, bread and scones ; these wore so good and 1 plentiful as to give tbo judges no atnall amount of labour to d?eide as to the prize winners. There ws a good competition in bops for Messrs Uuxton A Co. 'a prize, which resulted in the prize being awardod to Mr John Inglis, junior. The judges for plants and (lowers were Messrs Hood and Uuilden, for bouquets Mesdamcs Cooke and Thorp, for butter Mr I l '. W. Thorp, cakes and bread Messrs, Johns and Goodman, for hops Mr A. Drunimoiid. The prize list will be published to-mor-rojy,
