A large meeting of tbe ladies of the oongregation of the Presbyterian Church was held last evening to discuss and make necessary arrangements for carrying out the conversazione to be held at the Provincial Hall on Wednesday, the 16th inst. A good programme of vocal and instrumental music will be provided, and judging by the very enthusiastic way the ladies have taken this up there is little doubt of it being a great success. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr H, Eyre-Kenny, R.M., the case of J. Sharp v. Oe. Siloook, which was adjourned three weeks ago, was called on. Mr Pitt stated that it was agreed between the parties interested that judgment should be given for the plaintiff for £20, and £3 costs, three months to be allowed to pay the money in, Judgment was formally entered up as prayed.— la the case of Wilkins & Field v. Thomas H Coleman (Hope), judgment was given for the amount claimed, £2 2s, and costs 16a, Messrs John M'Nairn and Co., of G-las* gow, writing in July, state that they are selling New Zealand cheese at 52a to 64s per owt, as against 43a and 44s for new Canadian and United States. They say : " This must prove to you and your friends in the colony in the trade that New Zealand cheese has established itself in the Scotch markets, and has taken a very prominent position." Here it seems to us a feather in our cap to make a penny a pound more for oheesa that comes 15,000 milea fchan for oheese that comes 3000 miles. New Zealand cheese is really now preferred to Home cheese, because it is ripe, Bhows good meat, and is well flavoured." Rotorua, in order to inspect the rocks at the entrance of the harbour, whioh it ia proposed to blow up. Tiie Coach road on both sides of. the Wangamoa Saddle ia in a deplorable state. We are informed that the water tables are completely blocked up and that the track itself is full of deep ruts. In Eorne places the mud is axle deep. If the road is so bad in comparatively fine weather it iB not e asy to think what it would be like in a wet season. We have had to refer to this road before, whioh being, aa it is, th e main coach road between Nelson and Blenheim should be kept in a proper state of repair. The particular part we refer to is narrow enough at the best of tiniea, but what with land slips and ruts it is now almost impossible. We trust that the proper authorities will look to the matter and that complaints about the road will not be so frequent in the future as they have been in the past. A Public Tea and Christmas Tree in connection with Christ Church parish will be held on September 23rd in the Provincial Hall. In an address at Melbourne on Jcmo 17th, Mr Hanry Varley said :— " Melbourne waa needing badly a proper drainage system, and that he oould take ten thousand men and put them at this work, and keep them at id for five years, paying them £2 10s per week and that the entire amount could be met with the drink bill of Viotoria for 1889, whioh waa about £6,500,000. Note.— The labour of ten thousand men for five years at £2 10a per week swallowed in one year. — Advt. Colonial clothing.— We have just replen. ished our stock with some excellent goods of colonial manufacture, which we can highly recommend.— Everett Bros.— Advt
