THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE DOOMED.
[From our own Correspondent,] Wellington, Augush 18, As wa3 anticipated, the days of the San Francisco mail eervioe are numbered, and authority for the renewal of the contract, whioh expires in November next, is not like'y to be asked for. Mr Mitohelson has reoeived a cable from San Fran.ieco that the Tonnage Subsidy Bill has not passed, but that tha United States Government offers a subsidy o. 60,000 dollars if New Zealand will oarry the service on for another year, As thia would only mean ..12,000, our Government oannot see their way to ask Parliament to continue the service, Proposals will therefore be aab« mitted for an outward fortnightly direot servioe, payment to ba by letter and tonnage. The Imperial Government will arrange for the service from Englaad, and this will probably bo by federal packet. The total cost to the colony of the San Francisco service last year was £21,876, besides which N. S, Wales contributed £17,000, the United States £4,000, and the Imperial Government bore the cost of trans, mission between London and San Francisoo which they now decline to continue.
